Let me help you style your session

Let’s talk about the question that always comes up before a session…

“What should we wear?!”

First of all — take a deep breath. You are not alone in wondering this. In fact, wardrobe is one of the biggest stressors for clients before their session. And I completely get it! You want your photos to look timeless, cohesive, and beautiful — not trendy in a way that feels outdated next year.

The good news? Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

What you wear plays a big role in the overall look and feel of your images, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little guidance and a few simple styling principles, you can show up feeling confident, comfortable, and completely photo-ready.

Whether you’re planning a family session, celebrating your senior year, or booking portraits for your little ones, this guide will walk you through exactly what works best — and why.

Let’s break it down!

👨‍👩‍👧 What to Wear for Family Sessions

Family sessions are all about connection. Your wardrobe should complement that warm, authentic vibe.

1. Coordinate — Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose a color palette (think 3–4 complementary tones) and mix textures and patterns within that range.

Great color palettes:

  • Neutrals + soft pastels

  • Earth tones (rust, olive, cream, mustard)

  • Cool tones (navy, soft blue, gray, blush)

2. Start with One Outfit

Pick one person’s outfit first (often mom’s 😉), then build around it. Choose colors that complement rather than compete.

3. Add Texture & Layers

Cardigans, denim jackets, scarves, flowy dresses, knit sweaters — these add dimension and movement to your photos.

4. Avoid:

  • Large logos or graphics

  • Neon colors

  • Busy patterns that distract

  • Sneakers that don’t match the vibe (unless it’s intentional!)

Pro Tip:

If you’re unsure, lay everything out on your bed and snap a quick photo — it helps you see how it all works together.

🎓 What to Wear for Senior Sessions

Senior sessions are all about personality and celebrating this milestone moment. Your wardrobe should reflect you.

1. Bring Variety

I recommend at least 2–3 outfits:

  • Casual (jeans + cute top, relaxed look)

  • Dressy (flowy dress, sharp blazer, polished look)

  • Something personal (sports jersey, band tee, letterman jacket)

2. Choose Flattering Fits

Confidence shines through in photos. Make sure your clothing fits well and feels comfortable — not too tight, not too baggy.

3. Think About Location

Urban session? Edgy or trendy looks work beautifully.
Field or sunset session? Soft, flowy fabrics photograph like a dream.

4. Accessories Matter

Hats, layered necklaces, boots, or a statement jacket can elevate your look without overpowering it.

Bonus Tip:

Steam or iron your outfits ahead of time — wrinkles show up more in photos than you think!

🧒 What to Wear for Children’s Sessions

Kids are naturally adorable — we just want outfits that let their personalities shine!

1. Keep It Simple

Soft colors and simple patterns photograph best. Think timeless over trendy.

2. Comfort is Key

If they’re tugging at their clothes, it’ll show. Choose pieces they can move, play, and sit comfortably in.

3. Add Movement

Dresses that twirl, suspenders, overalls, cozy sweaters — these create beautiful visual interest.

4. Avoid:

  • Character shirts

  • Loud graphics

  • Ill-fitting shoes

Parent Tip:

Always bring a backup outfit (and wipes!). Just in case 😉

A Few Final Styling Tips for Everyone

  • Neutrals photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces.

  • Stick to 1–2 subtle patterns max per group.

  • Avoid clashing colors (like bright red and neon green).

  • When in doubt, classic always wins.

And remember — the most important thing you can wear is confidence. When you feel good, it shows.
